Egyptian Karkade (Iced Hibiscus Tea)

Egyptian Karkade (Iced Hibiscus Tea)

This drink is so red! It looks like cranberry juice but tastes more like lemonade. It doesn't look like tea at all! Strictly speaking, Hibiscus Tea is not really "tea". It is a herbal infusion, in this case, from Hibiscus flower petals.

Different cultures enjoy this beautiful ruby red drink. I researched it a little online, and it looks very popular, especially in Mexico, Italy, Thailand, etc. It’s a lovely way to enjoy your vitamin C. Some drink it hot; some drink it cold.

I like the cold version in the summer. Adding a small spoonful of sugar enhances the flavour. At CHA CHA TEA, I have organic Hibiscus from Egypt, so I call my Hibiscus Iced Tea: Karkade (Kehr-kih-deh).

How to make Iced Hibiscus Tea (makes 1 litre)
  1. Put 8 heaping teaspoons of Hibiscus flower petals into a teapot.
  2. Pour in 2 cups of boiling water and steep for 5 -7 minutes.
  3. Strain and sweeten with sugar (optional).
  4. Half fill a heat resistant pitcher with ice cubes.
  5. Pour strained hibiscus tea over the ice cubes.
  6. Stir and top up with cold water to make 1 litre.
